During the current growth of our city, we’ve provided precast structures for the construction of several new schools. On this occasion, we’d like to focus on Captain Gabriel L. Navarrete Middle School. The project site is located at 7100 Hayes Avenue near Fred Wilson Avenue and is one of EPISD’s newest school campuses. The general contractor that is building the school is Dantex General Contractors, and our direct client and subcontractor to Dantex is Del Mar Contracting, Inc. We’re happy to be working with Del Mar again, as well as with the engineer of record for this project, SLI Engineering, Inc., which is based here in El Paso.
Our scope of work includes 48” diameter sanitary sewer manholes, 48” diameter storm sewer manholes and storm sewer inlets. It’s been exciting to manage this project, since it includes oversized storm sewer structures that require a much larger team effort than usual. The structure dimensions vary, but the largest are 28’ long by 3’-4” wide by 4’-8” tall and weigh 29,000 pounds. The specifications for these structures did not depart from typical city specs, but are longer than most. From the start, the various departments of our team worked together to ensure engineer’s approval and paid close attention to the manufacturing process in order to provide the specified dimensions. This is always part of Western Precast’s process, and we enjoy working on projects that take us out of our comfort zone and challenge us to become better at what we do.
The majority of the structures we produced for this project were completed earlier this year between January and February. This is still an ongoing project and is expected to be completed by the Spring 2022 semester. We continue to look forward to furthering our contribution to our school districts and completing many more learning institutions ahead!
