Winter 2022: Note from The Office

note from the office -summer 21

Spanish

It is always a thought-provoking exercise when sitting down to write this note for our newsletter. There are various topics in regard to precast concrete that could be covered and we often do that. As I was looking at the articles that are included in this edition, I thought about the purpose of our newsletter and what the goal was when we started doing this back in 2006 . The reason we started doing these newsletters was solely and purposely to highlight our staff members. A vehicle by which we could honor and praise the great work that our people are doing here at Western.

With this in mind, I would like to thank each and every staff member no matter the length of service or the department you are working in. One day of service or 35 years, each and every staff member is equal to the  next. The old  “corny”  adage that a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest  link, is the real truth. What good would it  do for us to  honor the department heads and forget the newest staff member who is just beginning their career? The newest member is here to support our older members and the long-term members are here to mentor and guide our youth.

Safety is always our greatest concern, which translates to our care and concern for each staff member. We spend countless hours doing training and teaching safe practices to keep each staff member safe! We have all seen the commercials on television where attorneys claim that accidents happen because the company is unsafe and always places money over safety. I am not sure who these attorneys are referring to. I have been here at Western since 1984 and have never seen an instance where we would ever ask a staff member to cut a corner, rush, or act in an unsafe manner. Exactly the opposite, we have always empowered our staff to shut down an operation if unsafe, no matter the cost. Frankly, I don’t know any corporate players who are encouraging their staff to operate in an unsafe manner.

When an accident occurs, each and every time, I can point to a safety procedure that was ignored or a careless act by a  staff member. Simple procedures like never standing under an object being lifted, never standing above the safe height on a ladder, never driving in excess of the posted speed limit, always tie off and secure yourself as directed, wear your PPE at all times, are just great starts in keeping yourself and your fellow staff members safe. A reminder for us all, we are given the tools and the education to be safe, we must use these tools and follow the safe procedures, or accidents will happen and once that occurs each of us is responsible for the result.

In conclusion, take a look at all the great faces featured in each newsletter, these are our staff members and we are thankful for the hard work and dedication of each person. When it comes to safety, “we are our brother’s keeper”, safety is our responsibility.
