Production Procedures for Cold Weather Placement of Concrete

(Spanish)

Western Precast’s Production Department uses several procedures for casting concrete during the winter or cold weather months. One method for protecting concrete that has been placed into forms is achieved by the use of concrete curing blankets. These blankets are common in the industry and are typically of a three-layer type with foam insulation.

Another method of protection for fresh concrete is the application of a curing compound to seal the concrete surface, once the initial concrete setting has occurred. These methods help to keep the freshly placed concrete from reaching a freezing concrete temperature before reaching final setting. Poorly protected concrete can develop strength at a lower rate or fail to set properly. These steps ensure that our structures retain moisture, properly set and achieve the best possible early concrete strengths. In addition to production practices, the Quality Control Department ensures that every structure has met the design requirements for handling before any pieces are moved off the casting areas.
